Quick summary
Diesel bug needs free water. That water often arrives as humid marine air through the fuel tank vent: daytime heat pushes air out, night cooling pulls moist air back in. Ethanol-blend gasoline can also pull water until it phase-separates. A desiccant Fuel Guard (air vent dryer) sits in the vent hose, lets the tank breathe, and captures water vapor before it reaches the fuel.
Practical Sailor named the product an Editor's Choice in 2013; Nigel Calder has recommended it in seminars and on video. At the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival, Calder went further on winter practice: run the tank down rather than top it off, make sure your filler cap is sealing properly, protect the vent with a Fuel Guard, and start the season with fresh fuel you actually plan to burn. Many sailboats carry far more tank volume than they use in a season, so filling for storage wastes expensive fuel that will break down anyway. Pair that with spare filters. For cabins, lockers, RVs, and safes, use a renewable space dryer instead of running a compressor dehumidifier.
What is diesel bug, and why does it need water?
Diesel bug is not algae. Algae needs light. A closed tank has none. Yachting Monthly describes diesel bug as microbes (bacteria and fungi) that live on diesel when even a little water is present. Biodiesel holds water more readily than older petroleum diesel, so the problem shows up more often in modern tanks.
Practical Boat Owner notes that the organisms live at the water–fuel interface. Dead biomass sinks as sludge. That sludge clogs filters and injectors, especially when a boat heels or hits a chop and stirs the tank. PBO also quotes Marine 16's Peter Weide: water sits behind a large share of fuel trouble, and no additive removes free water or sludge by itself. You still have to keep water out, or get it out.
If there is no free water, diesel bug has nowhere to live. Practical Boat Owner's additive test put it plainly: without water, the bug cannot survive. Stopping humid air at the vent is the cheapest way to starve it.
How does water get into a boat fuel tank?
Three common paths:
- The vent line. As you burn fuel, the tank draws air through the vent. That air is wet marine air.
- Diurnal breathing. Fuel warms and expands by day, then cools and contracts at night. Fresh humid air comes in each cycle. A boat that sits all winter still "breathes."
- Filler caps and rain. A tired filler-cap seal lets spray and rain in. Yachting Monthly lists a worn cap as a first check after a tank clean.

H2 Out's Fuel Guards sit in that vent hose. Silica-gel media captures vapor before it reaches the fuel. Air still moves so the tank can fill and empty.
What is fuel phase separation in ethanol gasoline?
Ethanol in E10 gasoline mixes with water. When the blend takes on too much water, it splits: an ethanol–water layer drops, and the remaining gasoline loses octane and can corrode metal. Hawaii's Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation states that once phase separation occurs, fuel stabilizers and water separators will not reverse it. The tank needs to be emptied and the fuel disposed of properly.
A vent dryer does not "cure" phase-separated fuel. It cuts the moisture that drives the problem while the boat sits. Keep filler hardware tight, and do not leave a half-empty ethanol tank breathing all winter without drying the incoming air.
Should you fill the tank for winter storage?
Old-school advice was simple: top the tank before lay-up so less air sits above the fuel, and less condensation forms. That habit made more sense when diesel sat stable for a long time. Modern ultra-low-sulphur diesel with FAME (biodiesel) does not. It breaks down in months, not years. A full winter tank is often a full tank of fuel already on its way to sludge before spring.
Nigel Calder made that point as a featured speaker at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival. His guidance, as heard on the ground there:
- Run the tank down while the boat is out of regular use, instead of filling it "just because."
- Fit an H2 Out Fuel Guard on the vent so the larger air volume above the fuel does not pull humid marine air into the tank.
- Make sure your filler cap is sealing properly. With a sound, properly sealing cap and a dried vent, free water should not collect in the tank over the winter.
- Start the next season with fresh fuel. Buy and add what you will actually burn.
That last point matters most on sailboats. Many carry large tanks and burn little fuel in a typical season. Topping up for storage locks money into diesel or gasoline that will degrade before you use it. With a Fuel Guard in place, you can leave headspace, protect the tank from vent moisture, and add only the fuel you need when the season opens.
Practical Boat Owner, citing Marine 16, lands in a similar place: leave more headspace over winter, then deal with any water and add fresh fuel in spring, because today's fuel degrades fast. Yachting Monthly still shows owners who prefer a near-full tank plus biocide. If you stay with the old full-tank habit, a Fuel Guard still dries the air that does move. Calder's Port Townsend frame is the clearer fit for H2 Out owners: run it down, guard the vent, make sure the filler cap is sealing properly, start fresh.
Still inspect the water separator, carry spare filter elements, and replace a cracked filler gasket. A Fuel Guard stops vent humidity. It does not fix a leaking cap or sludge already in the tank.
How does a Fuel Guard air vent dryer work?
The tank must vent. The Fuel Guard does not seal the vent. It dries the air that passes.

- 2012 Pittman Innovation Award and 2013 Practical Sailor Editor's Choice, as recorded by Pacific NW Boater.
- Nigel Calder recommended Fuel Guards in seminars and later on camera with H2 Out. Calder does not do paid product plugs; that video is the sales tool many owners already trust. At the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival he also argued for running tanks down over winter when a Fuel Guard is in place and the filler cap is sealing properly, then starting the season with fresh fuel.
- Inventor Rich Pindell compared biodiesel in a Fuel Guard–protected drum against unprotected storage. The protected sample stayed clear; the other showed water and sludge. Pacific NW Boater republished that comparison.
A SailboatOwners.com thread already treats an H2Out vent dryer as normal kit alongside biocides: kill existing growth if you must, and stop feeding it with wet air.
Does a vent dryer protect an EPA carbon canister?
Gasoline boats with evaporative controls often have a carbon canister on the vent so hydrocarbon vapor does not dump overboard. Moisture loads that carbon and can plug it. H2 Out lists carbon-canister protection as a Fuel Guard job on the product page. Dry air into the canister is easier on the carbon than raw marine humidity. If your boat has a canister, put the dryer where it treats air before that canister sees it, and keep the hose unkinked.

How do you install and service an H2 Out Fuel Guard?
Install
- Find an accessible stretch of fuel-safe vent hose (usually 5/8-inch ID). Vertical is better for flow.
- Cut the hose. Do not remove slack that prevents kinks.
- Slide on the supplied clamps, insert the barbs (either orientation works), and tighten.
- Other hose sizes: call H2 Out at (360) 350-2656 for an adapter.
Service
H2 Out prices replacement media so you can swap it at annual engine service. Used media can pick up fuel odor, so the company does not tell you to bake it on a stove. Practical Sailor (March 2018), as quoted on the Fuel Guards page, reported about three years of media life on diesel and about five on gasoline before a change. Many owners, including Pacific NW Boater, still change yearly because the refill is cheap.

What about moisture in the cabin, RV, or safe?
Fuel Guards treat tank air. They do not dry a hanging locker.
Enclosed boat spaces (heads, closets, salons), RV cabinets, gun safes, and pantries grow mold when humid air sits still. H2 Out space dryers use renewable desiccant, no electricity, which matters on a mooring or in a storage building. Recharge the media on a schedule instead of running a compressor unit that needs power and a drain.
Use a Fuel Guard on every fueled tank (boat, generator, or machinery). Use a space dryer where people, fabric, paper, or steel live.
A practical fuel-and-moisture checklist
- Fit a Fuel Guard on each fuel-tank vent. Size AVD-2 or AVD-3 to tank volume.
- Confirm the filler-cap gasket and the vent hose have no cracks or standing loops that trap water.
- If you have an EPA carbon canister, dry the air that reaches it.
- Prefer Calder's winter plan when a Fuel Guard is installed: run the tank down, make sure your filler cap is sealing properly, and add fresh fuel in spring. Do not top off "for storage" if you will not burn that fuel.
- Sample the separator bowl. Black slime or a water layer means you have a cleanup job, not just a dryer job.
- Carry spare primary-filter elements. Diesel bug often shows up when the boat is heeled in a channel, not at the dock.
- Put a renewable space dryer in lockers, the head, and any safe or RV cabinet that smells damp.
- Swap Fuel Guard media on your oil-change calendar, or sooner if the beads have gone from orange/blue indicator color to spent (follow the pack).
